Maxim Thorne taught Philanthropy in Action, a Yale seminar in the Spring of 2012, in which students gave away $100,000. The students were empowered to design their own evaluation criteria and make their own selections in awarding the funds. A companion website (http://philanthropyinaction.yale.edu) provides more information on the course, the grantees, and has video of conversations Thorne and the students had with notable philanthropists including Harry Belafonte, Julian Bond, Mimi Gardner Gates.

At 14, after visiting a Manila slum with the Christian humanitarian group World Vision, he returned to his middle-class home outside Melbourne, Australia, and announced to his mother he wanted to dedicate his life to ending extreme poverty.
